"Whether playing in a band [like Solas], as an accompanist [as with Liz Carroll], or as a solo performer, John Doyle has a magical touch, always providing exactly what is needed: the right progression, a nimble melody, a delicate harmony line; a dream guitarist."
– Irish Edition
Irish-born John Doyle is one of the very best and most sought-after folk guitarists, but also an accomplished singer and an excellent songwriter.
One of the founding members (together with Karan Casey) of Irish-American super group Solas he has also performed in numerous other constellations: With folk icons like Liz Carroll, Andy Irvine and Karan Casey, as musical director for Joan Baez, as the anchorman in Mary Chapin Carpenters acoustic trio, in the trio McGoldrick-McCusker-Doyle and lately in the Irish folk super group Usher's Island to name but a few.
John Doyle has recorded albums with Solas, Karan Casey and Liz Carroll and contributed to numerous others. His debut album as a solo artist, Evening Comes Early, was released in 2001 and his second, Wayward Son, in 2005. Whereas the two first albums mainly contained traditional material, his latest, Shadow and Light from 2011, showed his strength as a songwriter. Many of the songs are based on the history of Ireland and his own family and carry the distinct fingerprint of his rythmic and melodic guitar playing.
On stage John Doyle accompanies himself on various string instruments and is both singer, musician and storyteller. Definitely something to experience - see for youself via the music/video links below!
